Thousands of vulnerable children in Cambodia suffer the same extreme poverty as children in Africa: poor education, unsafe drinking water, food shortages and a bleak future. Immediate action is needed to build long-term solutions, such as a school, wells and irrigation canals for farming and income.

Cambodia, in south-east Asia, has suffered greatly in recent history. Mass genocide, civil war, poverty and corruption have plunged its children and families into extreme hardship. It is shocking to know that life expectancy in Cambodia is nearly as low as in Kenya, and that 1 in every 12 children die before they reach their 5th birthday.

One of the poorest regions of Cambodia is Svay Rieng, in the south-east of the country. The children, families and communities of this remote area experience severe disadvantages and threats to their survival:

Not enough schools: This means thousands of children miss out on one of the most important ways to break the cycle of poverty.
Unsafe drinking water: Water is not safe in Cambodia. If children drink unclean water they can die from typhoid, dysentery or diarrhoea.
Poor access to food and income: Rice farming is the main method of survival, but a severe lack of water and irrigation means families suffer from very low rice crops and little money.

With your help, the Build a Brighter Cambodia appeal will provide the solutions for a sustainable future. You can help to:

Build a new primary school to enable 515 children to access an education, and improve their life chances.
Build 62 wells to provide clean, safe drinking water, and 262 latrines to significantly reduce the spread of disease.
Build 5kms of irrigation canals to improve farming, food and income opportunities for families and their children.
