ChildFund Australia is searching for five passionate marathon runners to run the 2012 Marathon de Paris, and fundraise to support our work with children in East Timor. Are you up for the challenge?

In April 2012, we can send you packing to Paris – ChildFund Australia has secured five tickets for the city's world-famous marathon, which is limited to just 40,000 lucky runners each year. You’ll have time to enjoy the best of Paris before running the marathon on 15 April. Indulge in the art, food and fashion the city is famous for, then cap off the week with the physical challenge of a lifetime!

The 42km event starts at the Champs-Elysees, passing iconic sites including the Louvre, Seine River and Eiffel Tower. At the 35km mark, you'll even be treated to wine and cheese – only in France! – before starting the countdown to the finish line.

By running this event you will achieve so much. You’ll have run an international marathon but you’ll also fundraise to help provide 48 community volunteers in East Timor with essential healthcare training.

Every day in East Timor children die from preventable illnesses such as malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory disease. In fact, one in 10 children die before the age of five. Your support will give children in East Timor the best chance of celebrating their fifth birthday.

The communities that you’ll support are in rural areas where families are often unaware of the health services available and the nearest healthcare facility is usually very far from home. By training community-based volunteers to provide healthcare information, families will have the opportunity to learn about topics such as immunisations, illness identification, disease prevention and hygiene. With four volunteers in each community, you’ll be helping 12 communities in total.

The facts:

• Dates: 11-16 April 2012 (6 days including flights – you can choose to extend your stay, however, additional costs will be your responsibility)
• Marathon date: 15 April 2012
• Accommodation: Twin share (centrally located city hotel)
• Fundraising target: $11,831 ($8,000 donation to ChildFund Australia and $3,831 for travel costs and travel insurance, excluding airport taxes of approximately $170)
• Registration fee: $700 (Please note the registration fee is in addition to the fundraising target and is non-refundable)

Remember, your support will provide essential healthcare training for 48 volunteers in 12 communities and give children in East Timor the best chance of celebrating their fifth birthday.
