The Hon. Tim Fischer AC

Envoy for ChildFund Australia
The Hon. Tim Fischer AC

Tim Fischer and his wife Judy have been ChildFund sponsors for over two decades

The Honourable Tim Fischer AC is the former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. A former Australian Army Officer, Tim served in the Vietnam war, an experience which has left him with a lifelong affinity to Asia.

Following the war’s end, Tim began his political career. During the next 15 years, Tim held a number of senior roles in both the NSW State and Federal governments, including Leader of the National Party, Minister for Trade and Deputy Prime Minister.

In 1997, as Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Tim had the opportunity to visit his sponsored child, Pecharin. In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald at that time he remarked: “Whatever degree of suffering children have in Australia - and there certainly is some - they have a better situation than many of these children in north-east Thailand. But in helping we can also learn from the quiet dignity of these people and their way of life."

Today, Tim is Australia's Special Envoy to the Kingdom of Bhutan, having filled similar roles for Eritrea and South Sudan.

Tim has written several books, most recently publishing Holy See, Unholy Me – 1,000 days in Rome, where he reflects on his time as Ambassador to the Holy See. During this three-year appointment, Mr Fischer worked closely with the Vatican on all aspects of the Canonisation of Australia's first saint, Mary MacKillop.

Tim’s other works include Seven days in East Timor, Outback Heroes and Trains Unlimited in the 21st Century. In 2005 Tim Fischer was appointed Companion of the Order of Australia.

Today, Tim and his wife Judy sponsor Benjamin, age 15 years, in Timor-Leste, and continue to live on their family’s cattle farm in rural New South Wales.
