Ethiopia: programs & priorities
ChildFund Australia's affiliate organisation in Ethiopia assists
over 280,000 children and families in 34 urban and rural
communities.
In addition to ChildFund in Ethiopia's health, nutrition,
sanitation, micro-enterprise, education and early childhood
development programs, ChildFund is implementing a number of
programs to improve family incomes, with farmers being trained on
modern agricultural production, including bee keeping, sheep and
goat breeding and vegetable production.
Due to the regular occurrence of drought, ChildFund in Ethiopia
provides emergency assistance to children, including
supplementary feeding, restocking livestock in agricultural
communities, and implementing water catchment systems, to improve
crop yields.
Development in progress
In the regions of Wonago and Siraro, ChildFund in Ethiopia is in
the process of building two new schools and bringing hope to the
children of Ethiopia. ChildFund will expand its Child Education
Projects in two districts of Ethiopia where communities are in
the greatest need of help; bringing the benefits of literacy and
learning to thousands of children and their families.
Each school will have four furnished classrooms, a library,
teachers' resource centre, toilet facilities and a ramp for
disabled access. The schools will harvest rainwater during the
wet months through roof catchment systems, and the schoolyard
will include a substantial vegetable garden to teach the children
modern farming techniques and supplement children's diets.
ChildFund in Ethiopia is also working with local community
leaders to highlight the importance of women's education, and the
enrolment of girls at the new primary schools is now on the
increase.
