Why children in Ghana need your help

While Ghana is rich in natural mineral resources, the country's children are still some of the poorest in the world.

Children in the north of country are especially vulnerable, and thousands die each year from preventable illnesses such as malaria, diarrhoea, measles, malnutrition and malaria. This is partly due to greater levels of poverty in the north, as well as a lack of access to primary healthcare services.

Many children are also at risk from harmful traditional practices, including female genital mutilation, early marriage and polygamy, which is also linked to the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Country facts

Ghana, officially known as the Republic of Ghana, became the first sub-Saharan country in colonial Africa to gain its independence, which it achieved in 1957. However, the country's first independent government fell victim to corruption and mismanagement, which was then followed by a series of coups.

Ghana has since gained political stability and is now seen as a fairly well administered country by regional standards. Gold, timber and cocoa are Ghana's most profitable exports.
