Philippines: real lives
Following the devastation caused by typhoon Xangsane, ChildFund
Australia's affiliate organisation in the Philippines provided
emergency assistance to children and families affected by the
disaster. This included operating Child Centred Spaces in
temporary camps set up for those left homeless.
In addition, ChildFund in the Philippines formed a partnership
with the City Health Office to set up medical missions at the
centres, which are used by ChildFund to help children return to
normal childhood activities following natural or manmade
disasters.
In one Child Centered Space, volunteers from the community and a
local doctor, Dr Estrallado, participating in the medical
service. The most common ailments included acute respiratory
infection, cough, cold, fever and diarrhea, which left unchecked
could become life threatening.
"I am happy that I was invited to provide my services as a doctor
to the parents and children of this barangay who were much
affected by the typhoon," said Dr Estrallado. Each day an average
of 420 children attended the four Child Centered Spaces
established by ChildFund in the Philippines following the
typhoon.
Other emergency assistance provided by ChildFund in the
Philippines includes the distribution of rice, canned goods,
noodles and potable water. ChildFund coordinated with the City
Health Office to offer medical assistance in the worst-hit
villages, addressing community sanitation, hygiene and water
purification needs.
