Thailand   While Thailand's economy continues to develop rapidly, many rural communities, and ethnic minority communities continue to live in poverty. Child trafficking, both internally and to neighbouring countries, is a significant problem. The incidence of HIV and AIDS infection is also high, and exacerbated by the country's large sex industry.
Country factsThailand is the only country in south-east Asia which has never been colonised by a European nation. In recent years, however, it has had to contend with Muslim separatist outbreaks of violence in the southern region. In 2006, a bloodless coup was led by military commander-in-chief Sonthi Boonyaratglin, which removed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The reigning Thai royal family endorsed the new leadership, and elections for the new government will be held in 2007.

Most of Thailand's
population rely on agriculture for a living, but the semi-arid
climate and poor soil conditions means families often have very
little produce left over to sell, and the transportation costs of
moving produce to market can further erode incomes. As a result,
over a million Thai children do not attend school as their help
is needed at home.
