Country Facts

  • Unlike many other countries on the African continent, Ethiopia has never been colonised, although it was occupied by Italy in the 1930s.
  • In Ethiopia, all meals are accompanied with injera – a pancake-type, flat bread used to scoop up the national dish of wot, a form of stew.
  • Coffee is believed to have originated from Ethiopia, as well as castor beans.

Why children need your help

  • Less than half of all primary school-aged Ethiopian children attend school.
  • Malnutrition is common among children, with almost 40% of under five-year-olds being underweight.
  • In rural villages, most women give birth at home without skilled birthing attendants and are unable to access immunisation programs for their infants.
