The AmericasIn Latin America, advances in education and healthcare have resulted in reduced under-five mortality over the past decade. However, widespread poverty remains a problem and awareness, diagnosis, education and treatment of HIV/AIDS remains low, particularly among indigenous groups and those living in remote, rural areas. Many families in rural areas still rely on subsistence farming to survive, and lack access to clean, safe water and healthcare facilities. In many South American cities, rapid urbanisation has resulted in families living in over-crowded and unsanitary slum areas. In working with governments and local community organisations, ChildFund's projects in Latin America provide effective and long-term solutions to these problems. They not only tackle community priorities, but provide for the present and future needs of children.
