Mexico: programs & priorities
ChildFund Australia's affiliate organisation in Mexico has been
assisting children in the country since 1955 and opened a
national office in May 1973. ChildFund in Mexico currently
assists approximately 117,000 children and their family members.
ChildFund assisted communities, in cooperation with the Mexican
government, have opened health clinics which provide medical and
dental assistance, medicine and guidance regarding disease
prevention.
ChildFund in Mexico also assists with the nutritional needs of
children. Enrolled children can eat breakfast or lunch at soup
kitchens, jointly operated with the Mexican government through
municipal programs. ChildFund in Mexico works with parents and
communities to strengthen their ability to organise, manage and
implement development programs.
Development in progress
ChildFund in Mexico is running several innovative programs
including Youth and Children in Action. This is a psychosocial
and educational program, which trains youth to become leaders by
enhancing their community development skills.
An environmental healthcare program, which includes the provision
of safe water, latrines, and housing improvements, is benefiting
approximately 12,500 families.
ChildFund in Mexico is also implementing a development program
aimed at empowering local women to manage the maternal and child
health programs being implemented in over 190 communities.
