60 seconds with … John Harris

Ever wanted to know what it’s like to work in international aid? In this special series, we introduce you to our many dedicated staff members working behind the scenes and on the ground, in Australia and overseas.
We hope you enjoy meeting #TeamChildFund!

My name is John Harris.

I’m the ChildFund Pass It Back Safeguarding and Regional Support Officer.

My role involves providing technical support to the ChildFund Pass It Back program in Vietnam. I’m also leading a separate regional safeguarding children in sport project, where I work with sporting organisations to improve their capacity to keep children safe from harm.

I’ve been at ChildFund since 2016.

John can’t live without coffee and music. He also likes a good groove on the dancefloor.

My most inspiring moment at ChildFund was a trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland in August 2017. I was lucky enough to be able to support the ChildFund Pass It Back team, and spend time with the three coaches and 15 players. Seeing the personal development that the girls went through on that trip was fantastic, particularly as they were able to voice very strong ideas on gender equality in response to the event (the Women’s Rugby World Cup).

The things I love most about my job are working with our ChildFund Pass It Back coaches. They are fantastic fun to work with and are the backbone of the program.

When I was a child I wanted to be a professional rugby player, but unfortunately I was rubbish at rugby! So then I decided I’d like to become an English literature teacher.

The country I’d most like to visit is Mongolia, for the adventure, and Japan for the vinyl record shops.

The top 3 things I’d take with me in an emergency would be my iPhone, my french press and a bag of coffee.

My favourite dish/cuisine or place to eat is a big old traditional roast dinner with all the trimmings!

I’m really good at dancing!

I can’t live without disco music.

I’m looking forward to next summer when I will have three new nieces/nephews to meet for the first time.
