“I want to be a nurse because I will treat the people who are sick”
- Rita, 11 years
Since gaining independence in 2002, Timor-Leste is facing the immense challenge of building a secure future for its children and youth, who make up half of the nation’s population. The country’s fertility rate of 6.4 children is one of the world’s highest. Widespread poverty manifests in high mortality rates and malnutrition among children. ChildFund Timor-Leste works through local partners in six districts with a focus on improving local capacity to overcome the most pressing challenges faced by children and their communities. Programs include maternal and child health, education, water and sanitation, food security, youth leadership and livelihoods.
