60 seconds with … Chris Mastaglio

Ever wanted to know what it’s like to work in international aid? In this special series, we introduce you to our many dedicated staff members working behind the scenes and on the ground, in Australia and overseas.

We hope you enjoy meeting #TeamChildFund!

My name is Chris Mastaglio.

I’m the ChildFund Pass It Back Regional Director.

My role involves making sure ChildFund’s programming in Sport for Development is high quality, can be expanded across countries, and takes advantage of our many decades of experience in communities across Asia and the Pacific.

I’ve been at ChildFund for seven years in a couple of different roles.

Chris can’t live without his guitar, chocolate, cheese and a comfy pillow.

My most inspiring moment at ChildFund was seeing a young woman from the program grow from a player to a coach, to a supervisor of many coaches. And then to see her share that experience with others in her community, despite the many challenges she faced.

The things I love most about my job are working with young people from across the region and seeing them grow into role models in their communities.

When I was a child I wanted to do exactly what I am doing now! I had a geography teacher from a very young age who inspired me through his work in Zambia and helped me understand that I was fortunate to be getting a quality education.

The country I’d most like to visit is a difficult one to answer! I like to live in places rather than just visit. But I would love to go back and spend more time in the north of Afghanistan, which I think is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

The top three things I’d take with me in an emergency would be cash, MREs (Meal-Ready-to-Eat ration packs) and clean water. But, if it’s not too much of an emergency, my guitar, chocolate and a comfy pillow.

My favourite dish/cuisine or place to eat is too difficult to choose! Nearly every country I have been to has at least one delicious dish!

I’m really good at eating cheese.

I can’t live without cheese.

I’m looking forward to continuing my work with young people to support them to make a positive change in their communities for many years to come!
