Leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott sends message of support to Laos Water Cycle team
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has sent a personal message of support to the 17 Australians who are taking part in ChildFund Australia’s upcoming Laos Water Cycle challenge.
The team has already raised almost $60,000 to support water and sanitation projects in Laos and will set off on their cycling adventure across Laos and Cambodia in November.
An avid cyclist himself, Mr Abbott met some of the fundraisers at a recent charity auction in Coffs Harbour and happily posed for photographs outside the event.
“We had an amazing night!” says Laos Water Cycle team member Katie McLennan. “We raised over $10,000 at our charity auction and we got to meet Tony Abbott, which was interesting and exciting.”
In his message to the cyclists, Mr Abbott commends the team for taking up this opportunity not only to raise funds but to learn about the development challenges facing many parts of the world and to play a part in making a difference.
“It is great to see Australians getting involved and supporting worthy causes such as ChildFund. After all, it’s not what we have to do but what we choose to do which is the measure of our humanity,” Mr Abbott says. “I send my best wishes to the cyclists as you prepare for the Cycle in support of ChildFund through Laos and Cambodia.”
