Donations in Action – Chickens, Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, ChildFund is working with communities to combat poor nutrition and limited income generation opportunities. Chicks have proved to be the perfect solution as 25 chicks can provide 500 eggs per month for their family to sell at the market, as well as even more for children to eat. Eggsellent!

Nisansala lives with her grandfather who works as a labourer. As there is no guarantee of daily work, he often finds it very difficult to meet the basic needs of his family. Nisansala’s school attendance was directly affected by this poor income stream as there was little money for clothing and school supplies.

Since her grandfather received baby chickens from the Donations with a Difference program, life has changed for the whole family. Through hard work and determination, Nisansala’s grandfather has bred a flourishing flock of hens and as there is a demand for eggs in the local market, he is able to earn an extra income and support his family.
