Hayley and Stephen decided to support local communities as they challenged themselves to undertake the gruelling Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea.

Understanding how desperately hard the living conditions are in PNG, this father and daughter team decided they wanted to do more for the local people. Hayley describes their physical and fundraising challenge.

“After much discussion and deliberation my Dad and I finally decided to challenge ourselves and trek the historic Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. When a friend suggested fundraising for the communities, we did some research and found ChildFund Australia had programs in PNG. Their programs work with rural communities to create meaningful and lasting change, meaning the money we raised would make a difference to the community well into the future.

“Suddenly, the challenge became two fold – to raise $2,000 for the communities before boarding the flight to PNG and to trek the rugged terrain that Kokoda has to offer. Neither of these tasks were going to be incredibly easy.

“Through our online webpage and a few emails and facebook messages, we exceeded our fundraising goal in no time. Our work even matched the donations which meant we raised double what we had set out to achieve.

“Raising these funds make the painful trek slightly less painful. We are so pleased that the money we raised went to Papua New Guinea. It has a very special place in our hearts, and we will continue to visit the country in the years to come.”
